Botulinum toxin (Botox, Dysport)
Wrinkles appear through the regular contraction of certain facial muscles. (Laughing, talking …). With time, the skin loses its elasticity, its hydration diminishes, the lines and fine wrinkles linked to facial expression are transformed in this way into permanent wrinkles.
Botulinum toxin is an active substance (Clostridium Botulinum) which allows reducing wrinkles markedly without surgical intervention.
Due to its therapeutic effect, this protein has been utilized in medicine since several years under the brand name “Botox”.

Mode of action of botulinum toxin
Botulinum toxin acts at the level of neuromuscular bonds.
The smoothing effect sets in from the first week after treatment and is maintained for three to four months. Then, the neuromuscular connections are reestablished and the treated muscles are reactivated.
Consultation and treatment
Wrinkles treatment is performed at the consultation.
Botulinum toxin is precisely injected by the doctor, using a fine needle, into the muscle areas involved.
Immediately afterwards, the patient can resume normal activities.
The treatment can be repeated when the effect fades. Injections should not be repeated more often than every 3 months.
Side effects and contraindications
Botulinum toxin has been investigated for medical purposes for over 20 years worldwide, and was used for the first time for therapeutic purposes. Botulinum toxin has proved its effectiveness and its tolerance.
However, all medical treatments can cause side effects.
The side effects of botulinum toxin can be:
- related to the substance itself,
- to the injection technique,
- or both elements simultaneously.
Muscle impairment is one of the desired elements of anti-wrinkle treatment.
But the effect of the substance can sometimes extend to areas that do not want to treat and cause unwanted muscle weakness (eyelids for example).
Other transient side effects have also been observed in 1 to 10% of cases (headache, redness or edema at the injection site, dizziness, nausea, ...).
